Workbooks View Student Instructions
This is a working area for students to create drafts, outlines, and various preliminary work.
Only students create documents here and faculty may view this work only if students choose to submit them for you to see.
Workbook documents do not appear in Assignment Folder, Portfolio and Gradebook. Faculty may read and add comments to these entries, but there is no Assign Grade feature as there is in Gradebook.
By default, the Workbook area is not available to students on the Class Menu. To enable Workbook go to Faculty Center and place a check beside Workbook.
Important: If you make Workbooks unavailable on the Class Menu after class has begun, then students will lose access to their workbook documents. For this reason it is helpful to first alert all students that you plan to remove access to Workbooks so they have time to archive their work on their computers.
Making Comments and Editing Simply opening an entry does not change its status from Unread to Read. Rather, clicking on the Mark as Read or Comment changes the status. If you do nothing at all the status will remain Unread.
To make comments:
- Click on the title of the Workbook entry from the list.
- Click on the Comment button. A form will be displayed with the student's text (if they typed or pasted the assignment in) in a textbox.
- Enter your changes/comments/questions directly in the textbox. You may also attach a file.
- Click on Submit. This creates a new, separate document in the student's Workbook. A link to it (entitled Comments), is displayed under the original entry title in the Workbook.
Distinguishing Faculty Comments from Student Text To ease the reading of faculty comments made to entries, and also student comments made in response, it may be useful to use WebTycho's Text Formatting Editor to color code, or boldface or italicize each author's comments.
Another way, that would allow a universal separation of any author's comments, is to copy and paste the document into Microsoft Word and use its extensive text mark-up tools. Then, attach the file to the Workbook entry.
Deleting Comments If you have made Comments and wish to delete your comments and return status to Unread,
- Click on the title of the Workbook entry from the list.
- Click Edit
- Click Delete
- The entry will return to its original, unread state and the Comments link will disappear
Working with Attached Files When a student submits with an attachment, you will see a paper clip graphic next to the title in the student's Workbook entry. For information about computer viruses, see viruses page of this guide.
